PARASHA OF THE WEEK VA’ETCHANAN N. 46 Moses str PARASHA OF THE WEEK VA’ETCHANAN N. 46

Moses stresses to the Israelites the importance of keeping G-d’s commandments when they enter the land of Israel; Moses repeats the Ten Commandments and utters the Sh’ma and V’ahavta. Moses looks at the promised land by the banks of the river Jordan, and continues his final speech to the Israelites before he dies. Moses says, “I implored G-d to let me see this promised land, but G-d was angry with me because of you. G-d told me to appoint Joshua as your leader. “And now, O Israel, hearken to the commandments that I am teaching you so that you may live and possess this promised land. Do not add or subtract anything to that which I am commanding. Your own eyes have sees that everyone that followed Baal Peor was destroyed. Those of you who remained with G-d are all alive today. “G-d’s laws are your wisdom before the eyes of the nations. Nations will say, ‘Who is this great nation? One that has a Deity near and available for the people. One that has righteous decrees and ordinances like this entire Torah.’ Only take heed and guard your soul exceedingly so you do not forget… Make your experiences known to your children and your children’s children. “Remember the day at Mount Sinai when G-d spoke to you out of the midst of fire. G-d commanded you to observe the Ten Commandments and G-d inscribed them upon two tablets of stone. Take heed that you do not become corrupt and make yourselves an image of G-d, not in any form, not the likeness of male or female, nor any living thing, not sun nor moon nor stars. Do not allow yourself to be lured into bowing down to idols or serving them. These G-d allotted to the other peoples.

PARASHA OF THE WEEK DEVARIM N.45 Moses recounts t PARASHA OF THE WEEK DEVARIM N.45

Moses recounts to the Israelites episodes from the 40 years in the wilderness; he encourages the Israelites in their upcoming conquest of the land of Canaan. In the 40th year, in the 11th month, on the first day of the month. Moses speaks the following to the Israelites: “Remember G-d said ‘I have set this land before you, go in and take possession of the land… Now G-d, your G-d, has multiplied you and you are now like the stars of heaven in multitude. May G-d add to you another thousand times as many as you are now, and may G-d bless you. I knew I could not alone carry your contentiousness, your burdens, and your quarrels. So I told you to provide for yourselves wise men of your tribes. You agreed to this system of judges as overseers over the tribes and I charged these judges with specific duties. I instructed them saying ‘Hear disputes between your brethren and judge righteously between every man and his brother and the one who has come from abroad. You shall not show favoritism in judgment. You must hear the small and the great alike. You have no one to fear for the judgment is G-d’s. When a matter is too difficult for you, you shall bring it to me, and I will hear it.’ “.

PARASHA OF THE WEEK – DOUBLE PARASHA N.43 MATOT PARASHA OF THE WEEK – DOUBLE PARASHA N.43 MATOT – N.44 MAS’EY
Parasha Matot n.43
Moses describes the laws of oaths; the Israelites battle the Midianites; the tribes of Reuben and Gad request to dwell outside of the Land of Israel. Moses speaks to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying “This is the word that G-d has commanded. If a man makes a vow to G-d or swears an oath, he must not permit his word to remain unfulfilled. He shall do whatever has come forth from his mouth.“ The same goes for a woman, unless her father (in her youth) or her husband obstructs her vows. In that case, G-d will forgive her because of these obstructions. Every vow and every binding oath of self-denial, her husband can let it stand or her husband can annul it. As for a widowed or divorced woman, anything that she has vowed shall stand for her.
Parasha Mas’ey n.44
The sons of Reuben and Gad have promised Moses that they will help the other tribes settle the Promised Land before settling across the River Jordan. Moses records the journeys of the sons of Israel from when they were led out of Egypt by Moses and Aaron, from the first month of the fifteenth day, on the morning after the Pesach offering, when the sons of Israel went out before the eyes of all the Egyptians. For G-d had struck them down with the death of the first-born, with judgment upon their gods. G-d talks to Moses: “Tell the people that when you cross into the land of Canaan, you shall drive out all people who live there and destroy all their symbols, idols and places of worship. I have given this land to you. If you do not drive out the people who live there then those left behind will become like a thorn in your side. They will oppress you as enemies in the land in which you dwell and it will come to pass that what I had intended to do to them, I will do to you.” G-d has Moses tell the Children of Israel about the borders of Canaan and the land each tribe shall receive. Each tribe will give a portion of their possessions, land and animals to the Levites who take care of the Tent of Appointed Meeting with G-d.

PARASHA OF THE WEEK PINCHAS N.42 G-d gives Pincha PARASHA OF THE WEEK PINCHAS N.42

G-d gives Pinchas a covenant of peace; G-d explains the apportionment of the Land of Israel; the daughters of Tzelophechad petition to inherit their father’s portion; Moses appoints Joshua his successor. G-d says to Moses: “The priest Pinchas turned My anger away from the sons of Israel by bringing My rights to bear in their midst. Therefore, I shall give to him My covenants of Peace and everlasting priesthood.” After the death of the idolatrous Israelites, G-d tells Moses to take a count of the entire community of the sons of Israel from 20 years old and upward, according to their father’s houses. Each of the families is counted and numbered as G-d commanded. After the people were counted, G-d tells Moses: “The land shall be apportioned as an inheritance according to the number of names. To the numerous, you shall give a large inheritance, and to the few, a small inheritance. By lot this land shall be divided and it shall be received as a possession according to the names of the tribes of the fathers.” Now, during this counting and apportionment of land, the five daughters of Zelophehad come near and place themselves before Moses and Eleazar the priest and the entire community in the entrance of the Tent of Appointed Meeting. They say: “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company that banded together against G-d. He was not among Korah’s allies, but he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons. Why should the name of our father disappear from the midst of his family, just because he did not have a son? Please give us a possession too.” Moses brings their legitimate claim before G-d. And G-d responds: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak justly. Certainly you shall give them, according to the legal right of males, a hereditary possession and you shall cause their father’s inheritance to pass to them.”

PARASHA OF THE WEEK BALAK N.41 Cursing and Blessi PARASHA OF THE WEEK BALAK N.41

Cursing and Blessing the Israelites. Miriam and Aaron die and Moses and the Israelites must fight against the Edomites, Canaanites, Emorites and Amorites to continue toward G-d’s Promised land. Each time G-d helps the children of Israel win. Now, Balak, the King of Moab, sees how the Hebrews had won these wars. Balak sends messengers to Balaam, son of Beor, to tell him about the powerful Hebrews: “Come with us Balaam to curse these Hebrews. We know that whomever you bless, Balaam, is blessed and whomever you curse, is cursed.” Balaam answers: “I will spend the night here. G-d will speak to me and then I will give you an answer.” Later G-d says to Balaam “Who are these people?”. Balaam answers: “Balak has sent messengers to ask me to curse the Hebrews and drive them out.” G-d says to Balaam: “No. Do not go with them! You will not curse the Hebrew people for they are blessed.” So Balaam tells the messengers: “No.” When Balak hears Balaam’s answer he sends more important messengers to ask Balaam to curse the Hebrews. But Balaam would not saying: “Even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go against G-d’s word. And now, stay, and I will find out what else G-d says.” This time G-d tells Balaam: “You may go but do only what I say to do.” In the morning Balaam saddles his donkey and goes with the Balak’s officers. G-d’s anger flares as Balaam goes so an angel of G-d stands in the path to stop him. Balaam’s female donkey sees the angel of G-d standing with a sword in his hand and turns the other way. Balaam hits the donkey to get her back on the path. Three times this angel leads the donkey away from the path and three times Balaam hits his donkey in anger. Then G-d opens the mouth of the female donkey and she says to Balaam: “What have I done to you that you hit me three times?” Balaam answers: “Because you act against me. If I had a sword in my hand I would kill you.” The donkey then says: “Am I not your faithful donkey whom you always ride? Have I ever done this to you before?” When Balaam answers, ¬G-d suddenly opens his eyes, so he could see the angel of G-d standing in the path with his sword in his h

G-d instructs Moses and Aaron regarding the red heifer; Miriam dies; Moses hits a rock to bring forth water rather than speaking to it; Aaron dies. G-d said to Moses and Aaron “Speak to the sons of Israel and find a completely red cow on which there is no blemish and no yoke has ever come. You shall give it to Eleazar, the priest, and he shall take it outside the camp and slaughter it. Korah and his followers rebel against Moses’ and Aaron’s leadership and are killed; G-d instructs Aaron regarding laws of the priesthood. Now, Korah, a Levite, along with two sons of Eliab, decided to rise up against Moses with the support of 250 community leaders. They plot against Moses and Aaron, saying “You’ve gone too far. Why do you raise yourself up above us?” When Moses heard this, he fell on his face, saying to Korah and his followers, “Come morning, G-d will make known who G-d is and who is holy.” Then Moses added, “You have gone too far, sons of Levi. Is it not enough that G-d has set you apart from the community of Israel by having you perform the duties of the Lord’s Dwelling Place? Will you seek priesthood too? Truly, you rebel against G-d.

Parasha of the Week Shelàch Lechà n.38 In Paras Parasha of the Week Shelàch Lechà n.38

In Parasha Shelach Lecha Moses sends 12 spies into the Land of Israel charged to gather information and to scout out the land for military purposes, so to make the Israelites entering the Promised Land easier. In the Haftarah for Shelach Lecha, Joshua is continuing the mission that Moses began: planning a military action to conquer the land. Joshua sends two spies into the city of Jericho to survey the region and assess the military options. The spies lodge with a prostitute named Rahab, who lives along the wall built around the city. Somehow, the king of Jericho is alerted and orders Rahab to produce the men she is hiding. Luckily, Rahab is able to hide the men on her roof while her home is being searched. She successfully convinces the king that the spies have already left and can be caught if the king’s men give chase. Once the king’s men are gone, Rahab goes up to the roof to speak with the spies. She tells them that she heard about the miracles G-d performed for the People of Israel, and she believes in the Israelite G-d. This is why she protected the Israelite men, and turned against her own king. Then she demands that she and her family be spared when the Israelites attack Jericho, and requests some kind of sign that to prove that her family will not be harmed. The men promise to protect Rahab and her family and climb out of her window to safety. As they are leaving, they tell Rahab to leave a crimson cord hanging outside her window. The cord will mark her home as a safe house, and everyone inside it will be spared from harm, but anyone who ventures out of her house will be taking his life into his own hands. When the spies return to the Israelite camp and report to Joshua they say “The Lord has delivered the whole land into our power; in fact, all the inhabitants of the land are quaking before us” (2:24).

The Israelites receive instructions regarding Passover; they journey forth from Sinai and complain to G-d on several occasions, provoking G-d’s anger; Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses. After the sanctification of the Dwelling Place for G-d, G-d spoke to Moses saying “Speak to Aaron and have him light the menorah so that the seven lights shall cast light.” And Aaron did so. Then G-d said to Moses “Take the Levites and purify them with waters that clear of sin, and make animal and flour offerings to G-d. Then you shall assemble the whole community and have the Levites come before the Tent of Appointed Meeting.” And it was done. G-d spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the second year after their exodus from Egypt. “Let the sons of Israel make Pesach on the fourteenth day of this month, between the two evenings. Even if a man is unclean, the Pesach offering with matzah and bitter herbs must still be made. The one who neglects Pesach offering to G-d shall be uprooted from among his people.”

Moses conducts a census of the Israelites; G-d describes the unique duties of the Kehàt family of priests. G-d tells Moses: “You shall take a total count of the entire community of the sons of Israel according to their families, according to their father’s house, counting the names of all males twenty years old and upward. But the Levites are not allowed to number themselves among them. For you shall appoint the Levites over the Dwelling Place of the Testimony. They shall carry the Dwelling Place of the Tent of Appointed Meeting and minister to it and camp around it. All the other sons of Israel shall camp with their own tribe, according to their divisions, at some distance around the Tent of Appointed Meeting.” Each of the descendants of Aaron (Moses’ brother) are anointed as priests, but Nadab and Abihu died when they brought a strange fire before G-d. Since they had no sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar remain to minister as priests.

G-d tells Moses to instruct the people in the laws of the Sabbatical and Jubilee years, as well as how to relate to those in the community who become impoverished. G-d speaks to Moses on Mount Sinai and tells him to tell the Israelites the following: “When you’ll enter the land that I give you, the land shall observe a Sabbath of the Lord. Six years you may sow your field and prune your vineyard and gather the crops. But in the seventh year the land shall have a Sabbath of complete rest, a Sabbath of the Lord. You shall not sow your field, nor prune your vineyard; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land. You may eat the Sabbath produce of the land. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, it shall be the Day of Atonement. You shall sound the shofar horn loud throughout the land. You shall make the fiftieth year sacred and it shall be a jubilee for you. In the fiftieth year, the Jubilee Year, you shall not sow, nor reap. You may only eat the growth direct from the field. In this year of jubilee, you shall not wrong another in buying or selling property. You shall observe My laws and faithfully keep My norms so you may live upon the land in security, and the land shall yield its fruit and you shall eat your fill.”

The Lord speaks to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, who died when they drew too close to the presence of the Lord. G-d says: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come at will into the Shrine, neither behind the curtain or in front of the cover that is upon the ark.
