Parasha of the Week Shelàch Lechà n.38 In Paras Parasha of the Week Shelàch Lechà n.38

In Parasha Shelach Lecha Moses sends 12 spies into the Land of Israel charged to gather information and to scout out the land for military purposes, so to make the Israelites entering the Promised Land easier. In the Haftarah for Shelach Lecha, Joshua is continuing the mission that Moses began: planning a military action to conquer the land. Joshua sends two spies into the city of Jericho to survey the region and assess the military options. The spies lodge with a prostitute named Rahab, who lives along the wall built around the city. Somehow, the king of Jericho is alerted and orders Rahab to produce the men she is hiding. Luckily, Rahab is able to hide the men on her roof while her home is being searched. She successfully convinces the king that the spies have already left and can be caught if the king’s men give chase. Once the king’s men are gone, Rahab goes up to the roof to speak with the spies. She tells them that she heard about the miracles G-d performed for the People of Israel, and she believes in the Israelite G-d. This is why she protected the Israelite men, and turned against her own king. Then she demands that she and her family be spared when the Israelites attack Jericho, and requests some kind of sign that to prove that her family will not be harmed. The men promise to protect Rahab and her family and climb out of her window to safety. As they are leaving, they tell Rahab to leave a crimson cord hanging outside her window. The cord will mark her home as a safe house, and everyone inside it will be spared from harm, but anyone who ventures out of her house will be taking his life into his own hands. When the spies return to the Israelite camp and report to Joshua they say “The Lord has delivered the whole land into our power; in fact, all the inhabitants of the land are quaking before us” (2:24).

The Israelites receive instructions regarding Passover; they journey forth from Sinai and complain to G-d on several occasions, provoking G-d’s anger; Miriam and Aaron speak against Moses. After the sanctification of the Dwelling Place for G-d, G-d spoke to Moses saying “Speak to Aaron and have him light the menorah so that the seven lights shall cast light.” And Aaron did so. Then G-d said to Moses “Take the Levites and purify them with waters that clear of sin, and make animal and flour offerings to G-d. Then you shall assemble the whole community and have the Levites come before the Tent of Appointed Meeting.” And it was done. G-d spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the second year after their exodus from Egypt. “Let the sons of Israel make Pesach on the fourteenth day of this month, between the two evenings. Even if a man is unclean, the Pesach offering with matzah and bitter herbs must still be made. The one who neglects Pesach offering to G-d shall be uprooted from among his people.”

PARASHA OF THE WEEK BEMIDBAR N.35 Moses conducts PARASHA OF THE WEEK BEMIDBAR N.35

Moses conducts a census of the Israelites; G-d describes the unique duties of the Kehàt family of priests. G-d tells Moses: “You shall take a total count of the entire community of the sons of Israel according to their families, according to their father’s house, counting the names of all males twenty years old and upward. But the Levites are not allowed to number themselves among them. For you shall appoint the Levites over the Dwelling Place of the Testimony. They shall carry the Dwelling Place of the Tent of Appointed Meeting and minister to it and camp around it. All the other sons of Israel shall camp with their own tribe, according to their divisions, at some distance around the Tent of Appointed Meeting.” Each of the descendants of Aaron (Moses’ brother) are anointed as priests, but Nadab and Abihu died when they brought a strange fire before G-d. Since they had no sons, only Eleazar and Ithamar remain to minister as priests.

G-d enumerates the rewards for keeping the commandments and the punishments for violating them; the laws of tithes are then listed. G-d says: “If you follow My Laws and faithfully observe My Commandments, I will grant rain so that the earth shall yield its produce and the trees their fruit. I will grant peace and you shall sleep with no fear. I will cause vicious beasts to withdraw from the land and your enemies will fall before you. I, your G-d, will look with favor upon you and make you fertile and multiply. I will establish My Covenant with you. I will place My Sanctuary among you and My Spirit will not reject you. I will walk among you, I will be G-d to you, and you will be a people to Me. I, who broke the bonds of your slavery and taught you to walk upright. But if you will not listen to Me, if your soul rejects My Laws and if you do not carry out My Commandments and break My Covenant, then I will do the same to you.”

PARASHA OF THE WEEK BEHAR N.33 G-d tells Moses to PARASHA OF THE WEEK BEHAR N.33

G-d tells Moses to instruct the people in the laws of the Sabbatical and Jubilee years, as well as how to relate to those in the community who become impoverished. G-d speaks to Moses on Mount Sinai and tells him to tell the Israelites the following: “When you’ll enter the land that I give you, the land shall observe a Sabbath of the Lord. Six years you may sow your field and prune your vineyard and gather the crops. But in the seventh year the land shall have a Sabbath of complete rest, a Sabbath of the Lord. You shall not sow your field, nor prune your vineyard; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land. You may eat the Sabbath produce of the land. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, it shall be the Day of Atonement. You shall sound the shofar horn loud throughout the land. You shall make the fiftieth year sacred and it shall be a jubilee for you. In the fiftieth year, the Jubilee Year, you shall not sow, nor reap. You may only eat the growth direct from the field. In this year of jubilee, you shall not wrong another in buying or selling property. You shall observe My laws and faithfully keep My norms so you may live upon the land in security, and the land shall yield its fruit and you shall eat your fill.”

G-d tells Moses to give the people a series of ethical and ritual laws instructing in how to be holy. The Lord has just told Moses to tell the Israelites about the law commanding an annual Day of Atonement and sexual prohibitions. The Lord says to Moses: “Speak to the whole Israelite community and say to them: You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your G-d, am holy. You shall each revere your mother and your father, and keep My Sabbaths. Do not turn to idols or make molten gods for yourselves. I, the Lord, am your G-d. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not pick your vineyard bare. After the death of Aaron’s two sons, G-d directs Moses to instruct the Levites and priests on the rituals of purification and atonement, including the special practices performed by the high priest on Yom Kippur. The ritual of the scapegoat enables the priest to atone for the sins of Israel. Through Moses, G-d commands the people to abstain from forbidden sexual relations, lest they defile themselves and their land as did the people of Egypt and Canaan. The Lord speaks to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, who died when they drew too close to the presence of the Lord. G-d says: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come at will into the Shrine, neither behind the curtain or in front of the cover that is upon the ark. Instead, Aaron shall only enter the holy Shrine when he is clean and dressed in his sacred garments.“
