THIS WEEK’S PARASHA Bechukotai n.34

G-d enumerates the rewards for keeping the commandments and the punishments for violating them; the laws of tithes are then listed. G-d says: “If you follow My Laws and faithfully observe My Commandments, I will grant rain so that the earth shall yield its produce and the trees their fruit. I will grant peace and you shall sleep with no fear. I will cause vicious beasts to withdraw from the land and your enemies will fall before you. I, your G-d, will look with favor upon you and make you fertile and multiply. I will establish My Covenant with you. I will place My Sanctuary among you and My Spirit will not reject you. I will walk among you, I will be G-d to you, and you will be a people to Me. I, who broke the bonds of your slavery and taught you to walk upright. But if you will not listen to Me, if your soul rejects My Laws and if you do not carry out My Commandments and break My Covenant, then I will do the same to you.”

Il Signore illustra le ricompense per il rispetto dei Comandamenti, le punizioni conseguenti alla loro violazione e le leggi sulle decime. Egli dice: «Se voi seguirete le mie Leggi e rispetterete con fede i Comandamenti che vi ho dato, concederò la pioggia per far crescere i frutti della terra e degli alberi. Concederò la pace, così che il vostro sonno sia libero da paura. Farò sì che le bestie feroci si ritirino dalla vostra terra e che i vostri nemici cadano davanti ai vostri occhi. Io, che sono il vostro Signore, veglierò benevolo su di voi e vi renderò fertili e in grado di riprodurvi. Farò un Patto con voi, il mio Santuario sorgerà sulla vostra terra e il mio Spirito non vi respingerà. Camminerò tra voi, io sarò il vostro Signore e voi il mio popolo. Io, che ho spezzato le catene che vi rendevano schiavi e vi ho insegnato a camminare eretti. Ma, se non mi presterete ascolto, se la vostra anima rifiuterà le mie Leggi, se non applicherete i miei Comandamenti e romperete il Patto, Io farò lo stesso con voi».
