Hanukkah in Venice (CHANUKAH / Chanukkah)

(Hanukkah / Chanukkah / Channucah )

Hanukkah is the commemoration of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd century BCE and the rededication of the second Temple in Jerusalem after it is desecration by Antiochus the IV.
The holiday also recalls the miracle that occurred: when rededicating the Temple, they only found enough pure olive oil for the Chanuchiah light to last one day. Instead, it burned for eight days, the time to make new oil.

Chanucah is celebrated by lighting every evening an additional candle on a nine branched menorah for 8 days.

THE GHETTO NOVISSIMO
was established in 1633. Mainly Spanish and Portuguese Jews lived there in spacious residential buildings and palaces.

Here I painted a relatively new ‘tradition’. The Chabad Chassidim put a chanucciah on a boat and circle with it around the Ghetto.

This is of course besides their traditional Chanuciah that is erected every year in the New Ghetto.
