Purim is celebrated in rememberance of the salvation of the Jewish people in Persia from the edicts of the king’s evil veizir. The message of this festival is the triumph of good over evil.
The Chassidim who are a sect of orthodox Jews originating in Eastern Europe, like to celebrate in Venice various festivals in boats. The painting depicts the Purim festival in the Ghetto Novissimo. Young and old in fancy dresses and masks pass in boats under the wooden bridge of the Ghetto .
