PARASHOT Matot n.43
Moses describes the laws of oaths; the Israelites battle the Midianites; the tribes of Reuben and Gad request to dwell outside of the Land of Israel. Moses speaks to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying “This is the word that G-d has commanded. If a man makes a vow to G-d or swears an oath, he must not permit his word to remain unfulfilled. He shall do whatever has come forth from his mouth.“ The same goes for a woman, unless her father (in her youth) or her husband obstructs her vows. In that case, G-d will forgive her because of these obstructions. Every vow and every binding oath of self-denial, her husband can let it stand or her husband can annul it. As for a widowed or divorced woman, anything that she has vowed shall stand for her.

Moshè spiega le leggi sul giuramento; gli Israeliti combattono contro i Midianiti; le tribù di Ruben e Gad chiedono di stabilire la dimora al di fuori della terra d’Israele. Moshè parla ai capi delle tribù dei figli d’Israele, dicendo: «Questa è la parola che il Signore ha comandato. Se un uomo fa un voto al Signore o pronuncia un giuramento, non deve permettere che la sua parola rimanga incompiuta. Realizzerà tutto ciò che è venuto fuori dalla sua bocca». Lo stesso vale per una donna, a meno che suo padre (quand’è giovane e non sposata) o, successivamente, il marito, impediscano i suoi giuramenti. In questo caso, il Signore la perdonerà a causa di questi impedimenti. Il marito può lasciar correre o annullare ogni voto e ogni giuramento vincolante di abnegazione. Per quanto riguarda una donna vedova o divorziata, tutto quello che ha giurato rimane valido e vincolante.
