Description

THE 1609 VENICE HAGGADAH

After having published several books of Jewish interest in Israel, Alon Baker, ScalaMata’s publisher contacted Rabbi Enrico Richetti the Chief Rabbi of Venice,  himself an enthusiast of Hebrew  books , with the idea of reprinting the famous 1609 Venice Haggadah  edited  by Rabbi Leone da Modena  and  printed by Giovanni De Gara.

This Haggadah is partly written in Judeo Venetian Laaz, a language that was used by Venetian Jews, like Ladino was used in Spain and Yiddish in Germany.

This Haggadah contains charming little rhymes which were transliterated and translated into English by the editor. All this emanated out of the strong feeling, that this language should be preserved and understood also by future generations.
