MY DAILY LIFE TORAH COACH:
PARASHAT KEDOSHIM N.31
Navigating Life’s Journey with Ancient Insights
Kedoshim is the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18). This principle underscores the importance of empathy, compassion, and kindness in our interactions with others. The Talmudic source that supports this is found in the
Babylonian Talmud, tractate Shabbat 31a, which states: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow: this is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation “go and learn”.
A gentile approached Shammai, requesting conversion with the condition that he teaches him the entire Torah while standing on one foot.
Shammai, who was a builder by trade pushed him away with a measuring stick. The gentile then approached Hillel, who converted him, saying “What is hateful to you, do not do to another” that is the entire Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and learn.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
